Another very interesting post Mr G.
Two things.
1.
To keep it short I think that words, when used, must have the same sort of rhythm and succinctness as the visual - otherwise they slow down the viewers' ability to take the information in. I write my copy - and make sure it is as punchy as needed. Have a pattern / structure - say CITY, Date, Event. Use Caps, colour, font variety to keep that as a key throughout. In captions drop the definite articles, use as few words as you can. The reader can get the detail in the copy, which serves an entirely different purpose.
Never have more than five elements in a sequence - (start, middle, end, with a fade in and fade out).

2. "a picture's worth a thousand words but it takes words to say that".
This sounds like one of those classic (and American) middle-management phrases from a self-help book that appear to mean something but actually mean nothing.
So it takes words to describe how inadequate words are at describing?
I'd say 'show me' what that means.
